ESB Millennium Ad, 26 November 1999.
TV commercial marking ESB’s Millennium celebration. This advertisement opens with three Irish landmarks from around the country: the Poulnabrone dolmen, County Clare, The Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary, and the Customs House, Dublin City. The commercial then shows clips from ESB documentaries, including footage of the Shannon Scheme, along with modern scenes and previous ads like the contemporary “Moving Eye (1997 & 1998)” and “Remote Control (1998)” commercials.
This advertisement plays on the marketing campaign tagline at the time, “Where do they get their energy?”. Looking towards the new millennium, this ad asks “Where will we get the energy?”, before showing some of ESB’s sponsorships such as the National Concert Hall and the Irish Basketball Superleague. The words “ESB + art”, “ESB + value”, and “ESB + sport” are shown, ending with just ESB +, asking the viewer to make their own association with ESB going into the new millennium.
